We have to admit it, here at BLS HQ our idea of exercise is a brisk walk down to Starbucks, but even we have found ourselves caught up in the sporting excitement of the past two weeks. Team GB did their nation proud swimming, cycling and sprinting their way to 65 medals. In the process a new generation of role models has stepped forward, proving that real achievement and notoriety is earned through dedication, motivation and positivity – and not through getting your bits out on a reality TV show or fondling a footballer.
It was very appropriate that the Spice Girls, ambassadors of Girl Power, stole the closing show after two weeks of Team GB women rocking the world sporting stage. We were SO proud to see Jessica Ennis, Victoria Pendleton and Laura Trott (to name a few) achieve the success they have worked so hard for and so very much deserved. Well done girls, you have done us all proud!
The closing show also saw the best of British music, with Jessie J, Take That, Queen’s Brian May, The Who, George Michael and a host of other artists taking the stage and showing the world what they are made of. There were a few moments where we did wonder whether the organisers had been smoking something in their planning meetings, but all in all they pulled off a spectacular show. We can only imagine how fabulous the after party must have been at the athletes village afterwards!
After years of typical British cynicism towards the games, it was wonderful to see London come up trumps and pull of such an incredible event. The city is buzzing with new-found unity and we can only hope that London 2012 leaves a positive legacy for a long time to come.
